On 5-7 October in Wohlde (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) a meeting of NGO representatives from the Baltic Sea Region was held. The meeting was devoted to preparations to the Baltic NGO Forum in St.Petersburg. This Forum will be the continuation of similar events held in Copenhagen and in Luebeck in March and May this year. The decision to summon the Forum in St.Petersburg is connected with the fact that Russia presently presides in the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS).
The CBSS unites 11 countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, and Sweden. The previous CBSS president, Germany, having organised the Luebeck Forum, proposed to summon such meetings annually before the meetings of the CBSS foreign ministers. This idea is supported also by state officials from Denmark and Finland. The Forums should give Baltic NGOs the possibility to discuss the ways of cooperation development.
21 NGO representatives from 6 countries of the region (Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, and Russia) took part in the Wohlde meeting. Russia was represented by Association "Norden", Environmental NGO "Green World", and European University in St.Petersburg.
The meeting participants discussed the results of the Copenhagen and Luebeck Forums, creation of national NGO networks on Baltic cooperation, and the goals connected with preparation to the St.Petersburg Forum.
